FNR ULTRASONIC IMAGING SYSTEM

By Charles Rhodes, P.Eng., Ph.D.

A very important accessory helpful for installation and removal of fuel bundles is an ultrasonic imaging system that allows the gantry crane operator to "see" inside the liquid sodium pool. This imaging system is an aid to easily and accurately positioning the fuel bundles, to seal the connection between the hydraulic line and the mobile fuel bundle position actuator, to add and remove the indicator tube, to hook onto the fuel bundle for lifting and to address other mechanical issues under the liquid sodium surface. When performing these operations the liquid sodium should be cooled to about 120 degrees C to minimize thermal stress on the ultrasonic imaging apparatus.
